An evening in Old City and discussion with Chantal Jauvin, on her new biography of a Thai street orphan who built a children’s charity.
A Thai orphan survives childhood in poverty in the countryside as well as life as a boy soldier. As a young man, Lek is befriended by two Jesuit missionaries, and goes on to partner to found the first credit union in Thailand. Eventually Dr. Amporn (Lek) founds an orphanage in Thailand. Winner of Rockefeller and UNESCO Awards, Dr. Amporn’s work at FORDEC (Foundation for the Rehabilitation and Development of Children and Family), as well as his riveting life story comprises Jauvin’s new biography, Boy with a Bamboo Heart.
