An evening in Old City and discussion with Chantal Jauvin, on her new biography of a Thai street orphan who built a children’s charity.

1331.jpgA Thai orphan survives childhood in poverty in the countryside as well as life as a boy soldier. As a young man, Lek is befriended by two Jesuit missionaries, and goes on to partner to found the first credit union in Thailand. Eventually Dr. Amporn (Lek) founds an orphanage in Thailand. Winner of Rockefeller and UNESCO Awards, Dr. Amporn’s work at FORDEC (Foundation for the Rehabilitation and Development of Children and Family), as well as his riveting life story comprises Jauvin’s new biography, Boy with a Bamboo Heart.

Chantal Jauvin recently relocated to Philadelphia upon retiring as Corporate Counsel for Western Union. She has lived in Mexico, Cambodia, Russia and Austria.  Chantal has negotiated in Paris, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo often enough to call these cities home.  She has addressed the Central Banks of Spain and South Africa, and worked with companies from Ghana to Uzbekistan, and mentored attorneys from Dubai to Mumbai.  Chantal and her husband Bill Thomas live in the Art Museum area, with their bicycles and motorcycles, and thoroughly embrace the cuisine, culture and conviviality of their new city.
