Please join us for an “almost summer” evening and get to know Joel Anderson, President & CEO of Five Below, while he speaks about how leadership and culture have been foundational to his success at Five Below, Walmart and in his personal life.
At Five Below, Joel has figured out how to achieve the impossible: quickly identify the changing tastes of teens and provide quality products to them – the majority priced under $5. Their stores are loved dearly by teens and pre-teens for their bright, colorful, fun and loud and even chaotic environment. Touching the merchandise is expected! An important aspect of this success is grounded in their culture and the values that culture drives. Not only values, Anderson says, but also how employees live those values, their behaviors. “All the behaviors within the values [at Five Below] start with the letter I,” he says. “You have to make it personal. You have to make it something [the employee] is going to commit to. When we do reviews, when we talk about promoting someone, we always go back to, ‘Are we living the behaviors that coincide with our values?'” Examples of I statements, Anderson says, are "I check my ego at the door" and "I respect all people."
Joel will also share how his experiences at Walmart shaped his perception of the benefits of a formalized culture and how he was able to build cooperation, teamwork, and citizenship by focusing on values while working at the powerhouse retailer. Joel said about his time at Walmart, “I believe people with passion drive performance. We had to remove employee frustrations and ensure all employees were treated with trust, respect, and dignity. We had to make values as important as results.”
Mr. Anderson is President & CEO of Five Below, Inc. since February 2015. Prior to Five Below, Mr. Anderson was President and CEO of Walmart.com. Mr. Anderson also held leadership roles across a range of operational, merchandising and marketing functions at Walmart, Toys “R” Us and Lenox. Mr. Anderson currently serves on the Board of Sprouts Farmers Market. Mr. Anderson also served on the Board of My Eye Doctor.
