In this session, participants will engage in various interactive exercises to discover how emotion and purpose can often determine how we approach/handle a situation. Through our established patterns and habits, we have taught ourselves strategies for how to handle various situations. These patterns are not always the most effective. We have to step out of our comfort zone at times to recognize that we do have a choice for how we react and how we lead. These choices define our character, our leadership impact, and the decisions we make. By awakening our awareness, we can develop as leaders in our industries and use the power of emotions to become more effective leaders. Attendees will learn how to use emotional intelligence to handle conflict. Participants will utilize a tool to assist in getting things done most effectively when leading/managing themselves and others.

Susan works with MEA’s 500 plus member companies to enhance their systems and improve their business results. Her expertise is in partnering with leaders of organizations to develop in-house talent and to strategically affect corporate culture by utilizing her high impact approach to training, instructional design and interactive facilitation skills. She has designed and implemented various programs in leadership, emotional intelligence, customer service, interpersonal skills and conflict management, just to name a few. She has taught at the university level and has spoken at various SHRM, ATD and Chamber organizations. She prides herself on keeping her participants engaged and motivated to learn. In addition to her Bachelor’s in Communication and a Master’s in Management, Susan is a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and enjoys teaching in the Human Resources Area as well. She is currently enrolled to obtain her Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP).

True Colors of Communication

 Alison DiFlorio 



How we communicate impacts our relationships, our effectiveness and our personal BRAND.  This session helps leaders intentionally define our desired BRAND, develop self-awareness of our communication strengths and blind spots, and to develop communication skills that support our BRAND.  We will define what is a personal BRAND; use the PACE Color Palette to discover our communication strengths and blind spots; know when to alter our personal styles to improve communication with others; and define action steps to maximize communication. 

Alison DiFlorio, PHR, is the Managing Partner of Exude’s Human Capital Consulting Division, which she co-founded in 2006. Her group provides expertise in the areas of training and development/ management coaching, HR compliance and process and on-site HR consulting/placement. Alison’s work is based on the belief that an organization’s greatest resource is its human resource.  In addition to her BA in International Studies, Alison is a Professional Human Resources (PHR), Certified Master Trainer of Myers- Brigg Type Indicator (MBTI) and is a member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), and the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM).

In this session, we will immerse ourselves in 4 distinct but interrelated dimensions of Creative Leadership – Vision, Curiosity, Simplicity, and Spontaneity. We will discuss how to harness these 4 essential “creative pillars” in your own leadership, drawing from the work of great artists, designers, musicians, scientists, and philosophers. But this is no abstract topic – you’ll learn powerful, immediately applicable strategies for unleashing your ability to lead with courage, change with confidence, and face the future with your imagination and critical thinking skills fully engaged.

As founder and president of Right Chord Leadership, Dr. Michael Brenner works with leaders and teams at all levels to amplify the essential skills needed to achieve peak performance. Michael’s unconventional workshops, executive coaching sessions, and consulting services – grounded in the belief that “When people work in harmony, great things happen!”™ – have helped his clients increase employee engagement, reduce turnover, improve customer service, and create more collaborative work environments. Michael – a professional jazz musician as well as a consultant, trainer, and educator – holds a Doctorate in Adult Learning and Leadership (his dissertation research focused on arts-based learning) and a Master's degree in Adult and Organizational Development. He has taught courses in organizational behavior, systems dynamics, negotiations, and interpersonal relations. Michael was 2014 President of the Philadelphia chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD) and Chairman of the Chapter’s 2015 Regional Learning and Development Conference. Michael currently serves on the HR Committee for United Way of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey, and the Rutgers University Design Thinking Program’s Advisory Board. He has spoken at conferences and conducted workshops around the world.

Culture is the Shadow of the Leader:  Are You Casting a Strategic Shadow
or Standing in the Shadows?

Culture defines how work gets done in an organization. Strategy defines the work the organization wants to get done, and leaders’ behaviors and actions set the cultural tone. The shadow leaders cast influences the behaviors and actions of everyone they lead. Leaders who think strategically are deliberate about three things: the direction in which they want to take the business, the culture that will support that direction, and the behaviors they must adopt to create the desired culture. When these three are aligned, the organization outperforms its competitors. In this interactive session, we’ll focus on culture and leadership from a strategic perspective. We’ll learn how to define our desired culture using a research-based and time-tested business model. And we’ll work together in teams identifying the key leadership behaviors to enable the desired culture.

Patricia Schaeffer is co-founder of Talent Strategy Partners and leverages her passion and expertise on the human aspects of change management. Formally trained as a group facilitator, through both Synectics and the Creative Problem Solving Group, Pat facilitates the development of targeted programs to gain employee buy-in and create business goal ownership. She is a board member of Beacon, the premier business executive network in the mid-Atlantic region; a guest lecturer on organizational development topics at DeSales, Rutgers, St. Joseph’s, and Temple universities; and a writer and blog contributor on the topic of creating cultures of innovation. She is a former board member and program co-chair with the Philadelphia Society for People & Strategy and a past President of PEBA, the Philadelphia area’s leading benefits and compensation professional association. The Reinvestment Fund of Philadelphia honored Pat with an award for her design work on their new performance management program.
