April 20th: Networking for Midlifers: "What Got Us Here Won't Get Us There"

If you joined the workforce before 2000 (i.e. before the Internet became the Internet we know now), you mastered a kind of networking that won't be effective in today's environment. Mid-lifers who have been working for the same company or in the same industry for many years may be in for a "culture shock" when they try to look for new opportunities.

Lou Blaser will share practical networking approaches that work in the current marketplace. She will talk about the bare minimums that we must do as well as low-hanging fruits that we can apply immediately.

Lou is NOT a marketer. In fact, Lou is an introvert who would rather have a root canal than attend a "networking event". What Lou has are years of experience as a female Asian American, who had to figure out how to make her voice heard in a way that worked for her. In recent years, she worked with mid-career professionals in career pivots where building and nurturing a network is a crucial step. Finally, in her current work as editor of a publication serving the midlife community, she has researched networking extensively - a topic that is of interest and relevance to the community she serves.

Lou Blaser
is the editor of Briefing Notes, a weekly digital publication that explores a well-lived midlife, and the host of Second Breaks, a podcast that talks about thriving in our second acts. Lou is a former management consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers and an IT leader in the medical device and pharma industries. She is the author of Break Free: The Courage to Reinvent Yourself and Your Career.
