A great opportunity: Take a key role in the Science Center's QED Proof-of-Concept Program as a Business Advisor
The Science Center’s QED Proof-of-Concept Program is seeking Business Advisors with experience in the life sciences
to collaborate with academic investigators in the Greater Philadelphia Region as they develop market-driven research
projects. The QED Program supports projects that will help demonstrate the commercial feasibility of early-stage life
science technologies. Working with the investigators, QED Program staff, and the Technology Transfer Offices, QED
Business Advisors will help guide the development of R&D proposals that are designed to retire business risk, thereby
enabling follow-on commercialization through licensing or investment in new companies. QED seeks enthusiastic
participation from Business Advisors with the following qualifications and interests:
• Extensive experience in life sciences product development, marketing, new business development, or a related
function.
• Interpersonal skills to work smoothly with academic scientists (sharing leadership and influencing appropriately in
an advisory role), Technology Transfer Office personnel, existing commercial sponsors, and potential licensees or
private investors.
• Availability and flexibility to work in a focused, part-time role, while maintaining the confidentiality of privileged
information and avoiding conflicts of interest.
Business Advisors are being sought to assist in developing R&D proposals for the QED Program Application phase by:
• Indicating a project that fits your market domain and technical interests.
• Helping the principal investigator to formulate a 12-month research project plan, guiding the development of the
commercialization strategy.
• Meeting (or speaking) with PI's weekly for eight weeks (September 2010 – November 2010) during proposal
preparation, committing ~5-10 hours/week, depending upon the project and your familiarity with its technology.
The end result is a written milestone-oriented R&D proposal and brief business presentation to the QED Selection Team
in mid-December.
Business Advisor participation in the QED Program is on a voluntary basis, although a small honorarium will be provided
to Business Advisors who work directly with PIs during the eight week proposal preparation period. Business Advisors will
be listed on the QED Program website and will have the opportunity to network with the Science Center’s community of
early life science development partners including Technology Transfer Offices, Industry Organizations and Angel and
Venture Organizations.
QED Business Advisors will meaningfully contribute to the commercialization of technology in Greater Philadelphia by
shaping R&D planning, enabling entrepreneurial involvement at the earliest stages of technology transfer, and. Further
