About Del Frisco's -
The building was completed in 1924 by Architect's, Ritter and Shay. These are the same architects who designed the U.S. Customs House Located in the Old City as well as the building on 1500 Walnut Street. Ritter and Shay received the gold medal award for the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) in 1925.
The Packard Building and the U.S. Customs House look very similar because they share the same iron work that was made by the same iron worker named Samuel Yellin. Today Samuel Yellin's ironwork is auctioned from time to time at Freeman's Auction House located on 18th & Chestnut. Yellin's family has continued to do iron work today as well.
The building was built by the Pennsylvania Company for Insurance on Life and Granting Annuities (this name is etched onto the side of the building on 15th Street). They were the first American Insurance company to offer annuities to the general public. The president of the insurance company was named Packard-hence the name of our building.
This area of the building, where Del Frisco's is located, was called the First Pennsylvania Bank. The bank closed its doors about fifteen years ago. The building was vacant for most of the 90's up until 2001. In 2001, it was purchased by the current owner and converted into a multi-use building. Above Del Frisco's are 12 floors of offices and then floors 15-26 condos. The very top floor of the building was where the boardroom was maintained when the building was converted in the early 2000's. Today, it is someone's home. Everything in it looks just the way it did 80 years ago. For example, the slate tiles, wooden paneling, an extravagant clock, and the fireplace. Above Del Frisco's are beautiful wooden spaces that have ceilings and columns similar to ours. Today it is being used as office space.
